Focus on Security and Safety

For many people, a secure lifestyle is one of the main reasons for choosing to live on the Schonenberg Estate. Security and safety are paramount to the Home Owners’ Association (HOA) and the Estate Manager is ultimately responsible for upholding security on the Estate. To assist him, a security company is employed to carry out all the usual functions to make Schonenberg a secure environment.

Security features include:

  • 24 hour, 7 days a week manned security entrances / exits
  • Regular pro-active foot patrols
  • A reaction / rapid response team
  • Perimeter electric fencing and walls
  • CCTV cameras throughout the Estate

Access Control

There are only 2 access / exit gates into and out of the Estate for both vehicles and pedestrians and both are manned by the security company. Booms are installed in the vehicle approach and there are turnstiles and a swing gate for pedestrian access. There is a specifically controlled area at the Waterstone Gate for contractors’ vehicles. Residents have to be registered to receive their own access disk (commonly known as a 'tag') and / or use their own biometric fingerprint, which will operate the access / exit booms and pedestrian turnstiles at both gates. The system is computer based and all movements in and out of the Estate are logged. Any non-resident has to be officially registered to pass through the gates.

Perimeter Security

The perimeter fence consists of a combination of steel palisade fencing and masonry wall. The fence has a fine-strand electric wire situated at the top and infra-red motion detectors installed along the entire fence. The security personnel make regular foot patrols of the perimeter, 7 days a week.

CCTV Cameras

CCTV cameras are installed at selected positions along the fence and at both entrances to monitor incoming and outgoing vehicle and pedestrian traffic. This electric equipment is monitored 24 hours a day at the security control building.

Estate Intercom

A private automatic branch exchange (FTTH) system is installed on the Estate to provide intercommunication between individual residences and the HOA office and the security offices at the Main Gate and the Waterstone Gate.

Calls using this intercom system are designed for:

  • Emergencies, to a dedicated number at security control
  • Residents to security control to advise security staff of expected visitors
  • Security to advise residents of visitors.
  • Low-cost communication between residents on the Estate.

Reaction / Rapid Response Team

A reaction / rapid response team consisting of two (2) armed security personnel are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to react to intrusions, emergencies or any other disturbances. In addition, the officers have received a special training to deal with snakes and are equipped to provide immediate assistance.

Speeding and Signage

There are well-signposted speed limits throughout the Estate, which are rigorously enforced for everybody’s safety, especially children. There is a maximum speed limit of 40 km/h (forty kilometres per hour) and lower speed limits of 30 km/h and 20 km/h are imposed where deemed necessary. The HOA has also introduced traffic calming measures, such as speed-humps and pedestrian crossings, and speed measuring controls are conducted on a regular basis.

Emergency Procedures

All cases of emergency, including but not only criminal entry, fire and civilian disturbances, should be reported to security control, whose staff is trained to deal with the situation 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
